Doncaster ‘C’ Versus Leeds’B’
Sunday 7 January 2007

Doncaster ‘C’  stumble to their fourth defeat in five matches by losing to Leeds ‘B’, at Leeds by 4-16 VPs.

After winning the first stanza of 8 boards by 17 imps, the second set saw a defeat by 34 imps so the team went into tea -17 imps down. 6 imps were pulled back from the next 8 boards but 41 imps were lost on the last 8 boards. Result - 52 imps to Leeds equating to 16-4 Vps.

Many thanks to David Ward for standing in when the team was a player down for this match.

The team will be looking to improve their league standing in order to avoid relegation this year. The last 2 matches are both at home against Sheffield teams.

Oo-oOo-oO

I would like peoples’ thoughts on the following bidding problem.

This hand occurred in the match and my bidding decision resulted in a catastrophic loss on the hand!

I will report the reasons for this later, after others have commented. I am probably looking for exoneration I suppose!!

As West, all vulnerable and North dealer you hold...

                S  6
                H  AJ6
                D  AQT8532
                C  A4
North, on your left, opens 1H and two passes follow.  I do not like to double since I do not hold the spade suit. I am playing weak jump overcalls so I cannot bid 3D and I do not like 4D - bypassing a possible 3NT if partner can stop Spades.

Rightly or wrongly I make a simple 2D overcall. North now bids 2H which is again passed round to you. Similar predicament. On the bidding so far partner is marked with some values. I suppose I could punt 3NT and hope for the best. Possible communication problems in 3NT though. Instead, I bid 3D to contest the part score.

North thinks for a while then bids 3H. This again, is passed to you.

Question: What, if anything, do you bid now?

Please answer using the form below. This will send your comments to me by e-mail and I will report the results at a later date.
